R.A.V v. City of St. Paul, teenagers that have been found guilty
andconvicted in the case of Virginia v. Black were found innocent
and they were set free. This wasafter an analysis of the Virginia
statute that made it a felony for anyone who intended tointimidate
another by burning a cross or a property that was related to the
other persons race,creed, religion, color or gender. In the St.
Pauls ruling, the court found that the lower court hadconvicted the
teenagers by discriminating on the basis of the content in terms of
the cross since itwas the evidence that they capitalized on to give
their ruling.In Virginia v. Black, teenagers that had made a cross
using pieces of broken chairs andburned the cross in the yard of
their neighbors who were a black family (Virginia v. Black, 538U.S.
343, 2003). They were convicted separately and charged with the
crime of burning a crossin the property of the plaintiff. This was
construed to be in violation of a Virginia statute thatoutlawed
such behavior. Their intentions were found to have been
intentionally aimed atintimidating the black family that lived
across the teenagers. The teenagers were pleadinginnocent based on
the first amendment which preserves the right of expression
