Christmas in PurgatoryIntroductionIn 1966, Burton Blatt shared a
shockingly unpleasant part of Europe; its mistreatment ofthe
residents of state-controlled mental institutions. He shared
pictures, accounts, and storiesfrom the institutions he visited
which held a harrowing reality of the most gruesome forms ofhuman
abuse conceivable. Disabled people were misunderstood and
dehumanized. The lack ofample resources, empathy and teachers had
combined to give horrifying results. In light of thisexposure, a
drive towards better treatment for differently disabled individuals
began to gainmomentum. Schools, in particular, were recognized as
important institutions in the recovery orassimilation of such
people. Children need to be helped today, for in too few
tomorrowschildren become adults and residents become inmates.

photos that I have chosen, main reasons why schools need to
beleaders in all students teaching, I will also discuss a Universal
Design of Learning (UDL), itsimportance in schools today and my own
